I LOVE Sushi. We had it in Hawaii for the first time, but have had it back here now as well. I think it's great food :) Sorry your experience wasn't the same. I take it that we won't be adding sushi to our family gatherings :)

I played an online text based game where you would have to read everything instead of see graphics. For example, it might say something like "You are standing in a beautiful wooded glen with sunlight streaming through the trees. A terrible ogre moves at the center of it, unaware of your presence. Possible exits are north, south, and east".

Then I can type north to head north and see what that room looks like, or I can "attack ogre" to start killing the ogre.

Of course the game was way way more involved (and fun) than just that. But that was pretty nerdy.

i once visited my cousin's school with her when we were visiting my grandma's house in the summer (they start school in august). I got really bored sitting there in class so i started squaring each number starting with 2. by the end of the class i had one entire notebook page full of numbers (about 4 columns).

Having said that, I think it is important that you DO get to know the other family very well before a sleep over. A play date is a bit more casual and carries a great deal less exposure.

Yes, you can and should ask the other mom to either leave video games and TV off the agenda, or to at least share with you ahead of time what video games and shows she allows her child to watch.

I also agree with you to skip making any issue of the food. You are building good eating habits into Elizabeth and they won't be erased by occasional indulgence at a friend's house.

And yes, I think it is wise to ask outright about guns in the house, but you can ask wisely, as in, "If you have hunting or other guns in the house, can you tell me how they are secured?"

Lastly, and most importantly, continue to assure Elizabeth that should she feel uncomfortable about anything, she should call you, at anytime, from anywhere.

You have brought her up well and she will be recognize danger signs and be responsible to report them to you.

I look at what's important and needed for that age to know and really understand. For example, my 2 and 3 year olds that i teach in church, I try to ingrain deeply in their heads that Jesus LOVES them. All stories get back to that point. I don't think Paul getting beaten by chains in jail is pertinent to what that age needs to know (our curriculum has the most bazaar stories that they really can't apply to their lives yet).

I think you are doing exactly the right things. Just like anything else, the Bible as food must be fed to us as we can handle it. You wouldn't feed Amelie choking food because her little body is not yet developed to handle it.

Let the Holy Spirit guide you in all you do and Elizabeth and Ami will grow into the kind of woman of God that you are.
