Living so close to our alma mater has some big advantages. The best is that we still have free access to its weight room, track, and exercise facilities. Isaac and I both take advantage of this regularly! As a former Hamline athlete, Isaac also has a free family pass to games and tournaments at Hamline. He enjoys taking Elizabeth to the basketball games in particular.
Today Isaac went at exercised at Hamline, then came back and switched childcare duties with me so that I could go run on the track. Once there, I discovered Hamline was hosting a huge gymnastics tournament. My run was extra-interesting because I could watch the competition as I ran, so I dumped my planned 20-minute quickie for my new time record: 36 minutes! (I felt so good that I wanted to keep going, but I stuck to my plan. Well, okay, I stuck to only skipping one short run of my plan!)
I've definitely noticed that running is easier when I have something besides myself to focus on, like the gymnastics tournament or good music. Isn't that true in our walk with God too? When we get our eyes off ourselves, the walk passes more smoothly and pleasantly. It's when we concentrate on ourselves that we notice every struggle and hill in the road!
Anyway, after my new record-setting run, I returned home, fed Amelie, and brought Elizabeth back to Hamline to watch some of the tournament. It was like having a front-row seat to our own personal Olympics! Her dancing/moving around the living room now has some new moves thanks to this impromptu field trip!
