We are reaching yet another new level of necessary childproofing at home. I know I keep blogging about this theme, but I've just never experienced a child like Amelie before! Before Amelie, I was one of those people who believed that you should simply teach a child to respect "no." It's as simple as that, right? Oh, how wrong I was.
While we are definitely working on understanding (actually, obeying seems to be the bigger problem!) "no," it is a never-ending process with very few visible results at this point.
The bathroom door is always latched closed on the outside now. Amelie preys upon it every chance we forget. I don't understand how she notices so quickly every time. She silently walks in, closes the door, climbs up on the toilet, dumps everything she can reach into the sink, and turns on the hot water. Every time. Multiple times a day. (I know. We should get better at latching the door. Or maybe we should just teach her "no!")
She can now reach the top of the dining room table from the floor, as well as climb up onto the chairs and onto the table. I thought it would be pretty to keep placemats on the table. Silly me. Anything we keep on the table simply begs her to climb up and inspect it.
She can also pull dishes off the kitchen counter now. She pulls in the stool and "helps" while I get food ready. That extends her reach even more! There are very few square inches that are safe from her "help." (I know. Just teach her "no," right? Please. Come on over and teach her!)
I love her dearly, but she does keep me on my toes.

I know my time is coming all too soon. We keep seeing Seth get more toys with small parts and I wonder how on earth I will keep Eli from eating them in a few more months...
This is precisely the time to ship her off to a convent in the Alps. I hear they have a Mother Superior who does wonders with kids.
hm... this is really tempting to say let me try. after all, it's what i do all day, right? i think i'll pass as i'm sure one day i'll be in your shoes!
