Amusing Anecdote

Our upstairs renter brought over her new hamster for the girls on Thursday. It took Elizabeth 45 minutes to work up the nerve to touch him. Amelie was not so shy. She petted (poked?) him numerous times.

Suddenly, too fast to stop her, Amelie shot out her arm and picked up the hamster. She started to run across the living room with her prize, while the poor hamster scratched her hand and struggled out of her grasp onto the floor. The renter and I immediately scrambled all over the floor trying to prevent the hamster from running under any furniture. Elizabeth stood on the couch and screamed. Amelie, unable to find the prize she had been holding, tripped over the small hamster running around her feet and fell straight backward onto the floor. She hit her head and joined Elizabeth in screaming.

The kind and slightly appalled renter tried to comfort Amelie. I ignored Amelie (I REALLY don't like small rodents loose in my house) and continued to corral the hamster. After a few moments of uproar, the renter safely contained the hamster back on her lap and I quieted Amelie and Elizabeth.

It really was a cute little guy. I'm trying not to think of it escaping its little cage upstairs!
