What to Do with a Sick Baby?

Amelie has an ugly cold, an ear infection, a slight fever, and the nastiest case of pinkeye I've ever seen. We had spent all of yesterday hunkered down at home (with the help of my wonderful and very distracting parents!) and she was worse today. She's not the type of baby to sweetly lie still and cuddle when she's sick, or sleep more, or any of the nice benefits one might expect. She can get kind of tough to handle.

So today, we buckled down and made it through the morning and a disappointingly short nap. When Elizabeth came home early from school (it's early release day), we girls packed up and headed out for a hike. With Amelie in the backpack, I determined, I could distract her with a hike and not use up too much of her waning sick energy or my waning caretaker energy. Besides, she couldn't get anyone else sick if she was stuck on my back in the middle of nature.

It was a lot of work, but I have to say - it was a brilliant way to spend the afternoon and evening with a pretty sick baby. Amelie had just enough energy to space out in the backpack, and Elizabeth and I got to spend some special time together and get plenty of exercise at the same time. We've got to do this more often, although I'm not sure Amelie could have lasted as long if she were feeling better!
