Books Are Our Friends

Elizabeth never answers the question "What is your favorite book?" She gets asked that frequently, because people know she loves to read and want to connect with her. So today, noticing that she was reading one of the Tolkien trilogy books yet again, I tried to coach her.

Me: "Let's say you go back to school and someone says, 'Hi, Elizabeth, did you do a lot of reading this summer?' What would you say?"

Elizabeth: "Yes, yes, yes! I LOVE to read!"

Me: "Well, what's your favorite book?"

Elizabeth, withdrawing immediately: "I don't know."

Me: "Why don't you say one of the Lord of the Rings books? That's what you've spent most of your time reading this summer."

Elizabeth, agitated: "But that wouldn't be fair to all the other books! I love ALL books, and it's not fair to say that I like one better than the others! It wouldn't be fair because I like all the books and I just can't decide."
