First Body Image Talk

As Ellie was eating lunch today, she asked, "Is my waist skinny or fat?" Isaac immediately assured her that she is beautiful exactly the way God made her. Ellie protested, "But people don't turn out the way God intended them to because of sin."

Wow. That's kind of deep. We decided that we need to insert some teaching moments into Little House as we read (Laura is now 15 and wearing corsets). I've always been very careful about what I say about my body or others' bodies in front of Ellie, and I never use the words "skinny" or "fat," so I guess she's starting to pick it up from the culture at age 3 1/2. Not cool.

Unfortunately, it's inevitable. We can't shelter our children forever, and we live in a society that is wound around image and material possessions. We just need to do our best to instill good morals and values in them and hope they make the right choices as they get older. (you know... the choices I didn't make!)

wow. i can't even believe it! how sad that it seeps through despite our attempts to keep it at bay.

I'm still way impressed with yours and Isaacs ability to instill such spiritual depth though... i'd say i can't believe she'd come up with something so deep but it shows how you are raising her! KUDOS!

Very insightful. I think that you have a fabulous idea of inserting some teaching moments into Little House.
