Splinter Trauma

Ellie played outside all Father's Day at Oma and Opa's. When we came home, I bathed her and checked her for ticks and found several small splinters in her calf (no ticks, though!). I distracted her while Isaac tried to get them out, with no success. We finally decided to leave them in for a while and hope they work themselves out.

Ellie suggested that we pray for them, so Isaac prayed first, and then Ellie joined in: "Dear God, please take my splinters out Yourself so that Mommy and Daddy don't take them out."

This morning, my friend Heather came over to drop off Isabelle. Ellie met her at the door yelling, "I have WOOD growing in my leg!" Heather thought she said "worms," and was very relieved to find out it was just splinters.

Any hints for getting splinters out when you can't see either end of the splinter? We've already tried soaking in a bath.

The only way I know is to use a needle and dig them out. Depending on how deep they are, it may not hurt at all, or could hurt a lot. I don't know any "easy" remedies.

My only suggestion is to use a small needle to open one side and then you can kind of squeeze the splinter through and pull it out the other side with the tweezers. Not fun but it works. By the way I am a friend of Lynn and Derek Snyder. I clicked on your link from her blog the other day and I really enjoy your posts. Hope you don't mind. I'm also the person who posted about the drying rack.

Or...you could just leave them there until they work their own way out. Two things: The body has amazing defense mechanisms. Plus, you have taken the offense now that you have prayed. Now stand in faith believing that God has answered that prayer. Just watch the area daily and you will see what He will do.

They will come out on their own. Seth had a couple already this summer from an old park structure and they worked themselves out in about three or four days I think.
