Midwife or Doctor?

We go to a Certified Nurse Midwife, but out of habit, I always refer to our appointments as "doctor appointments." And when Elizabeth asks about how Amelie will be born, I always say that I'll go to the hospital and "the doctors" will take her out.

Clearly I should have been using terms more precisely with her. Our midwife is wonderful, and always lets Elizabeth "help" measure my stomach and listen to the heartbeat with the doppler. Today, the midwife told Elizabeth, "You would make a wonderful midwife when you get older. Do you think it would be fun to catch babies?" Elizabeth smiled and nodded, but said, "I think it's better for DOCTORS to take out babies than midwives." Our midwife was left a little speechless, and I was left a little embarrassed.

It might help by explaining to Ellie that midwives are SPECIALISTS in assisting mothers deliver their babies. Also good to emphasize that mommy will be pushing the baby out, not that doctors are taking the baby out. I'm a fan of telling them how it really is though. I guess if you have a c-section, then the doctors are taking the baby out, but natural birth is such a miraculous beautiful experience that is a combination of mother, baby and divine intervention. In my opinion, midwives are far more qualified to attend non-surgical births and I would never see and OB unless I became high-risk.
