Yellow Baby

Amelie is jaundiced. Her bilirubin level is 15.7, and if it were a 16, she'd have to go back to the hospital. We now have special lights and a light blanket that wraps around her waist and hooks up to a machine at home. The blanket belt doesn't seem to bother her nearly as much as I thought it would, although it severely limits movement and confines us to a few feet from the machine. (You can't tell in the pictures, but the belt glows bright blue.) It's pretty wild looking.

You can pray for the following:
  • Amelie's liver matures quickly and starts getting rid of the extra bilirubin

  • She wakes up easily and nurses well. Lots of pooping will help her, and while she did great at the hospital, she hasn't pooped in over 24 hours, which is pretty concerning

  • Isaac and I figure out how to maneuver and care for her while attached to the blanket, especially as it relates to sleeping tonight

  • We get a positive report from the home health nurse tomorrow afternoon

Seth was jaundice as well. He was on the Billy blanket while still in the NICU and we did not have to do it any longer at home which was nice. I never realized how orange he looked, even though people commented, until I looked back at pictures months later. They really do look yellow!

Allison she is beautiful!!!! I'm sure they told you this, but put her in sunlight. It helps the bilirubin natually go down. However it's not the most effective thing because she'd have to be naked to get the full effect and that would make her cold. So I don't know how much help that is to you.

Hey Allison! It's so exciting when I saw the e-mail that you had had your little one! She is so beautiful. I take care of the bili babies (as we call them at the hospital) all the time at the hospital, it sounds like you guys are doing everything right with the feedings and pooping. I am praying that it will resolve on it's own! Hope she is doing well by now!
